Girasole

Girasole is a protected community for psychiatric patients of both sexes located in via Cagliari 14 in Bolzano. It hosts 10 patients sent by the Psychiatric Service of the Südtiroler Sanitätsbetrieb and has been active since 2003.

Since 2017, the community has been providing daily care for up to 8 patients in all aspects of daily life and rehabilitation.
Il Girasole provides care and rehabilitation on the indications of the individual medical teams of the psychiatric service. Since 2019 the service has been affiliated with the Südtiroler Sanitätsbetrieb.

Who does “Il Girasole” host? And what does the team do?

We mainly carry out health activities, including mainly:

Monitoring and/or emergency psychiatric interviews
Interviews with family members
Management and prescriptions of drug therapy
Management of network relationships
Management of network relationship

At “Girasole” are hosted only patients treated by the CSM (Center for mental health) of the Bolzano Psychiatric Service (not sent by other services or other facilities of the Bolzano service as ward or other communities).
It is therefore a matter of taking charge of adults who do not have as their main diagnosis the intellectual disability (those go to the psychological service) or the dependence on substances (those go to the SerD).

Patients staying at “Il Girasole” must be in a condition of sufficient psychopathological compensation and not in an acute stage of illness.
Patients who the judge has declared to be socially dangerous with a high degree of danger (intended for REMS) are not welcomed at “Il Girasole”.
However, up to 2 patients are welcomed at “Il Girasole” as an alternative to detention.

In addition to the aspect of care, the desire for freedom.

Each patient inside the facility is assigned to some simple household tasks, including the cooking: once a week the person in charge will have to go to the supermarket for daily shopping and cook for all guests. This last thing happens with the help of the operator; then there will be someone else who will help in tidying up and cleaning the room.

Thanks to the ten-year collaboration with the Institute for social housing construction, “Il Girasole” manages an ample terrain and a bowling alley where, in addition to breeding barnyard animals, patients are dedicated to fruit and vegetable production activities. During the summer some of our guests enjoy the game of bowls, or simply relax in the garden admiring the courtyard animals, including two of our rabbits who keep us company for almost 5 years.
